The Civil Services examination
conducted by the Union Public Service Commission is a coveted examination held
every year. It is held in three phases, which include the preliminary exam, the
main examination and the personality test.
If aspirants
wish to join the Civil Services, they need to apply on the upsconline.nic.in
website. The CSE exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission every
year includes 19 services, such as Indian Administrative Service, Indian
Foreign Service, Indian Revenue Service (Customs & Indirect Taxes) Group
‘A’, Pondicherry Civil Service (PONDICS), Group ‘B’, etc. There is no separate
IAS or IPS
exam.
The UPSC CSE
is a highly competitive examination. Candidates from different categories have
been allowed a limited number of attempts for the examination. Given that the
examination takes almost a year to complete, it becomes important to crack the
exam in the first attempt. Every candidate should take the first attempt seriously
and try their best to pass the examination.
Ace the UPSC IAS Exam in the First Attempt
Aspirants who
want to clear the Civil Services Exam in the first attempt should consider the
following points while preparing for the examination.
●
Go through the Syllabus
The UPSC has provided
a syllabus for the preliminary and main examinations. Candidates who plan to
prepare for the Civil Services Exam should go through the syllabus given in the
official notification released by the UPSC. They should be thorough with each
and every topic given in the syllabus. They need not study everything under the
sun to get through the examination. Aspirants’ primary aim should be to
streamline their preparation by going through the syllabus and examining past
papers.
●
Analyse the Past Papers
It is important to go
through the previous years’ question papers to understand the exam pattern and
type of questions asked in the prelims and main examinations. Analysing past
papers can help candidates in focusing on important topics and subjects.
●
Make a Study Plan
An effective strategy
and study plan are necessary to do well in the CS examination. Candidates should fix attainable targets and
strive hard to achieve them. They should adhere to deadlines given in their
study schedule. Candidates should devote enough time to all subjects. Aspirants
can formulate a different strategy for preliminary and main examinations.
●
Revise Regularly
Revising every week is
an important part of CSE preparation. The syllabus is vast, and revision is the
only component that can help candidates in recalling the information in the
examination hall. Revision helps in retaining the information for a longer
time.
●
Take Mock Tests
Taking mock tests in
exam-like conditions is vital for any competitive examination. Candidates who
are preparing for CSE should join a test series and assess their performance.
Based on the evaluation, they should work on their weaknesses.
These are
some of the points that every UPSC CSE candidate should focus on while
preparing for the examination.
Just like
there is no separate exam to get into the IAS or IFS, there is no separate IAS
or IPS Syllabus. The prelims and main exam
syllabi for all posts are the same, except for optional papers. The UPSC tries
to provide a level-playing field for candidates by providing a uniform syllabus
for all posts.
The UPSC CSE
preparation requires a lot of effort, dedication and consistency. There are no
shortcuts to get through the exam, and candidates need to strive very hard to
ace the Civil Services Examination.
